All Blogged Up: A Moof’s Tale

Facebook Weigh-in #1

FaceBook Question #1:

Do you think that as years pass and technology advances, that we’re heading inexorably toward a homogenized electronic social experience which blends reality with fantasy?

Enrico Cantu:

After I googled half those words to know what they mean, I have to say, in no uncertain terms and without reservation, “I have no idea.” William Gibson does, though.

Peggikaye Eagler:

Absolutely … I think.

Rob Lamberts:

Well, I suppose that there will be a mix of virtual experiences and “real” ones. I think we will be able to tell the difference between reality and fantasy, however.

Pattie Iannitti:

Ummm..huh? *hehheh*

Clay Jones:

I like pudding!

Arunn Narasimhan:

All “electronic” experiences that are “social” could become homogenized for a segregation. Blending reality with fantasy is irrelevant under such homogenization. The reality of the non-participants is far more disturbing.

Vijay Sadasivam:

Err.. um… Aren’t we there already?? At least the small percentage of the world’s population who are broadband & Web 2.0 enabled??

My thoughts:

I don’t think we’re there yet, but places like Facebook and Second Life are a thrust in that general direction. A truly homogenized electronic blend of reality with fantasy would have us booking our vacations in the latest electronic hot spots, enjoying them from the comfort of a cushy bed, and “coming back home” tanned, relaxed, and with a few pounds heavier.

Your turn … :o)

You’ve really taken to this Facebook experience. When I want to know anything I just go to your page to see what you’ve done!
I love my online existence but I do want to go to real places for my vacation! I did not care much for Second Life the few times I visited for practice, but it was amazing when a whole bunch of bloggers from different parts of the world were in the same(virtual) room at the same time IMing each other and moving the avatars around. A bit like Pownce with action figures. Are we moving there next? It costs money if you want to do anything interesting and since we are cheap I’m assuming the answer is no.

JMB, I once read a short story - I don’t remember the name now, but families paid huge bucks to put their elderly in retirement homes which provided the “virtual reality” of their choosing. The elderly were checked in once they could no longer care for themselves, and hooked up to VR machines for the balance of their lives. In their electronic experiences, they were young and healthy, leading idyllic lives … dining on the rarest fare, going wherever they wanted, engaged in “meaningful” relationships and social pursuits.

I wouldn’t want that now … but if I ever ended up abandoned in a home somewhere, VR would be a nice alternative to watching Lawrence Welk reruns and eating pureed prunes. ;o)

I had a weird revelation today… I saw someone walk buy with one of those cell phone “things” stuck in his ear - not like I hevent seen it before - but I thought it so much a vision of what we imagined the world to be like, 20 years ago, but it was all suppose to happen in he year 2120 ( or something like it)

    *lol*

Virtual reality, in what ever guise, is here !!

(hmmm..maybe I am being to serious)
