Sneeze/Nausea Connection – March 2007 Update
The Sneeze/Nausea posts I made last year: (The Sneeze/Nausea Connection and The Sneeze/Nausea Connection – Redux) continue to gather more comments – and more information. Not a week goes by that I don’t hear from someone who is plagued by (or knows someone who suffers from) this intriguing phenomenon.
Some of the data provided by sufferers of SAN (also affectionately known as SNAUSEA ;o), seem to indicate some sort of correlation – be it in the types of medications taken or in the medical histories, but the fact that there are those who apparently have no medical history suggests that this enigma begs for a closer look …
Is it, as a few physicians, have tentatively offered: a stimulated vagus nerve? If so, then stimulated by what? Could it be a response to the chemical components of certain medications? If so – which category of drugs is causing the problem? Could it be, instead, a medical condition causing the problem? Quite a few of the respondents suffer from hypertension and/or hyperlipidemia … is that causing the nausea? Or could it be that whatever is causing the medical condition is also causing the nausea?
I’m calling on all of my medically savvy readers to ponder on this one a bit. There are more Snausea sufferers out there than you’re aware of – and it’s more of a problem than you realize. This is a very unpleasant symptom, which happens without warning, can be quite violent, and can actually end in vomiting. Under any circumstances, sudden, violent nausea should be a concern – even if it’s relieved by sneezing. The mere social implications are jarring … never mind the ongoing personal discomfort of those who experience the phenomenon.
Hearing from you – with your ideas and suggestions – would be great! Asking your patients if they experience this sort of thing – would be even more helpful …
Do we have any new “Sneeze Associated Nausea” sufferers out there? How about someone who’s already sent us a bit of a history, but who has an update – or more complete information? We’re waiting to hear from you.
Also – if you have any unusual reactions associated with sneezing, please let us know! When you read the comments pasted in below, you’ll see that there are some rather varied affects reported – one person even wrote about a mate who sneezes when he becomes aroused … that might get a bit annoying after a while … ;o)
Either email me or leave us a comment in the comments section!
Hug a SNAUSIE today! :o)
SAN: I want to thank Brad Wright of Anatomy Notes who posted the original article about photic sneezes, which gave rise this entire conversation to begin with. He named the condition: “Sneeze-Associated Nausea (SAN for short)” … sounds good to me! (Good luck in medical school, Brad!!! :o)
SNAUSEA: Credit to Jody for coining the term “snausea.”

It’s so strange yet comforting to know that this odd phenomenon happens to someone else. I’m not sure why but I’ve never mentioned it to my doctor. Have you?
As far as my medical history goes, I am a 44-year-old, caucasian female. I have Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. My labs most usually come back normal with slight variences in my glucose levels. I am on a seemingly endless regimen of medications including metformin, Atacand, Avandia, Prozac, Wellbutrin, Aciphex, Yasmin, Zyrtec, and Zocor and last week I began Byetta injections to stablize my blood sugar levels. In addition to all of this I take a couple over-the-counter items including Vitamin E, a multi-vitamin and New Phase herbal supplement for symptoms of menopause.
My antihypertensive is Atacand 32mgs daily. I was put on this med because I couldn’t tolerate the ACE 2 inhibitors. It caused me to have a bothersome dry cough. It was so bad I couldn’t sleep at night.
I am overweight but since changing my diet, due to the diabetes, I have started to lose weight. Hooray! I’ve had no major surgeries and only had a general anesthesia one time to have my wisdom teeth removed. (valuim and versed IV).
I suspect I have some type of auto-immune disorder but it’s never been diagnosed. I have frequent fatigue that sometimes lasts for days. My practitioner did an Epstein-Barr titer and it was quite high but I don’t know how to interpret the results. I’ve looked online with no luck. I had mono about 10 years ago and just haven’t felt “right” since.
Extra comment from #1: Hi, everyone! I am the “History #1? person…the one without the growths. In the last month a “suspicious†marble-sized mass was found in my breast. I am currently being evaluated. I know at this point it is a solid mass, not a fluid-filled cyst. We’ll see what happens.
And, although I’m a nurse, I haven’t worked for a couple of years. I’m taking some much needed time off. :)

I am a 49 year old woman in good health. The only major health issue I’ve had is melanoma in-situ removed from my left knee in 2004. Get checked regularly. I take no meds other than supplements. I am a new nurse. I’ve been really worried about this. (brain tumor, sinus tumor?) I saw a handful of people on the internet that have this same thing, and no doctor seemed to know what it is.
Benign pituitary tumor-hmm-I also have a history of benign growths (fibroids, thryoglossal cysts, ovarian cysts, etc).
It is so bizarre when it happens. I don’t sneeze alot, but this happens a couple times a week. It happened today, in fact, and the nausea was so extreme I got a little scared. I never vomit, though, the stomach is not involved at all. And once I sneeze, everything is fine. I wonder if there is a tumor situation, increased intercranial pressure? Who knows.
Extra comment from #2: Hi folks, I am the History #2 person above. You know how migraine sufferers sometimes have an “aura†that tells them a migraine is coming? That’s what this nausea is like-when I feel it I know a sneeze is coming. Bizarre!!

I am 50(just) live in [...] Australia., I saw your post on a website about sneezing What you described is EXACTLY like my complaint…and I have been trying to find the cause. I thought it may be due to some medication I am on ????
I am a type 2 diabetic and am on Lipitor (cholesterol) and a new anti triglyceride drug as well as metformin(diabetes) and coversil (blood pressure).
September 9, 2006 – from the Moof:
I’m a 54 year old caucasian female. I have a history of cysts (ovarian, kidney, breast, etc.,) and fibroids, have chronic kidney failure and hypertension, secondary anemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism … and was told as a young woman that I probably have a benign pituitary tumor, although it was never verified, but he felt certain enough that he told me to avoid hormone therapy later in life. I am not diabetic, but have to keep an eye on triglyceride levels.
I’m taking Lipitor, Hyzaar, Clonidine, Norvasc, Calcitriol, adult aspirin daily, and monthly injections of Aranesp.
September 10, 2006 – Peggikaye:
Ok Moof, I’m here to expound as promised. :)
You asked me to put my conditions and medications. If you’re ready and you’re readers are ready …here we go. Warning for everyone, it looks far worse in the telling than it does in the reading!!! No pity!!!
Let’s do the conditions first, otherwise my medications will not make sense because you’ll think why in the world is 41 year old taking all this medication????
Myasthenia Gravis
Lupus (joints, costochondritis, pleurisy, MINOR pericarditis, mouth sores, lupus cystitis, hair loss, fatigue ….)
Asthma
GERD, History of ulcers, quite a few that left scars
Pyloric spasm, Hiatel Hernia, scars in my esophogus.
Osteoarthritis in knees, right hip, and shoulders
Hypermobile Joint Syndrome (born with it, my mom would dislocate my hips when she’d change my diaper, if they picked me up like they did a normal kid, they’d dislocate my shoulders. This is the cause of the early onset Osteoarthritis)
Eating Disorder -NOS ( large cause of most of the gastro intestinal problems)
Polyps on throat (probably also caused by eating disorder)
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Metabolic Syndrome (Insulin Restistance)
There are a few other things too but my mind is frying now, so on to the medications.
Mestinon 60 MG 3-4 times a day

I too have this problem, but it just developed recently. I thought it funny at first. Now, I’m wondering what it is. I have autoimmune problems: Lupus, mixed connective tissue disease, Raynaud’s, blood problems, and I take my share of meds too, including low dose prednisone, plaquenil, female hormones, wellbutrin, and cymbalta. If anyone figures out the connection, I’d sure like to know. I’m a 43 year old white female. I’ve had the medical problems since I was in my early twenties, but it didn’t become full blown until I had my second child.
September 22, 2006 – Susan:
Hi,
I too have the sneeze/nausea/bright lights connection. I am 39, caucasion, very fair-skinned. I’m not asthmatic and I don’t have any known allergies.
I have had this for many years, including whilst I was physically fit, on no medication and throughout pregnancy. The bright light connection began during childhood, I first became aware of the nausea/sneeze connection as an adult – maybe in my 20s. The nausea connection increased during pregnancy and when I get pre-sneeze nausea now I am reminded of being pregnant – not in a good way, it is a very unpleasant sensation, but clears completely once I have sneezed – usually a couple of times.
My husband is very sceptical of the phenomenon – especially the bright lights one – he thinks it is attention-seeking and would probably have me tried as a witch if we were in the 17th century ;-)!
I’d love to know more about it.
My mother developed sneezing fits in her middle age – she attributes this to pollen though & there is no mention of associated nausea.
With warmest wishes,
Susan

September 22, 2006 – Tracy Roeder:
I’m a rookie at this so I apologize if I’ve posted this twice. I am so relieved to find others who suffer from nausea before they sneeze. I have asked every doctor that I’ve seen for the last couple of years and they look at me like I’m crazy. I am desperately trying to find out why this happens. The nausea starts about 2 minutes before the sneeze comes on. The last straw was throwing up in my office before I could get to the bathroom. I am 37 and in pretty good health. I recently had a CT scan and MRI (for Bell’s Palsy) but both came back negative. I also have tachycardia (rapid heart beat)…at first I thought this might have something to do with the sneezing… I take Nexium and Toprol but had the nausea issue before I began taking the Toprol. Thanks to everyone for posting their comments. And to Moof! I feel better knowing I’m not the only person. Tracy
Added comment from Tracy: I forgot to mention that the CT and MRI were on the brain. Nothing unusual was seen.
October 9, 2006 – Marcie:
I just sent you an email after seeing a post on another site. I am a 35 yr old woman. This has been going on with me for a while. I have some sort of undiagnosed as of yet autoimmune disease and my kneecaps are shot from being hypermobile. But am otherwise in good health. I do take cymbalta and phentermine. I am overweight and now losing weight without trying- so I have some concern there. Iam on diet pills but have been on them for quite awhile and the weight loss is new. I will think I am feeling suddenly sick and then -bam- I sneeze and it is gone. Everyone thinks I am nuts!! Nice to see others with the same weird thing!!!!
October 13, 2006 – Kelly:
I have the nausea/sneeze connection as well, but does not seem to be connected with bright light. It seems to occur only when I take vitamins or medication on an empty stomach. I am a 39yo female, have no known conditions and do not currently take any prescription meds, and am in excellent health. I used to take Tetracycline for acne when I was 18 or so, which was when I first noticed the connection. I currently take several vitamins with breakfast, and found if I wait until my breakfast settles, then take my vitamins, I do not get the nausea feeling (or sneeze.) But if I take the supplements prior to or while eating, the nausea/sneeze usually occurs. Hope this helps (and doesn’t add to the confusion!)
October 14, 2006 – Laura Dawn:
also have nausea before sneezing which usually ends the nausea. I have diabetes, hypertension, fibromyagia and depression. This phenomenon has only been happeing for about 6 weeks. I’m a 59 year old female. I take metformin, glucotrol, diovan, coreg, lexapro, trammodol and just started cymbalta a few days ago. I had a fatty tumor removed and a bad parathyroid gland. I would love to know the cause of the sneezing. Actually I don’t mind the sneezing but the nausea is no fun.
October 15, 2006 – Jim Floyd:
I just came across this thread. I’m a 40 yo male and this nauseous sneeze thing started 2 months ago for me. Three months ago i began taking adderall for ADD and have assumed this was just another side effect.
(Moof’s note: Although there’s not much information here, I included this one because he’s one of only two males who’ve responded so far … I was beginning to think that it only happened to women …)
October 21, 2006 – Michael Cruise:
Hi just found this site, thank you everyone. I am a 38 year old male and have just started to develop this condition over the past 3 months. So here is my story
Healthy, only 1 operation ever to remove a salivary gland blocked by stones. Had hay fever since I was about 12 years old which was quite severe when I was younger but has been manageable in recent years.
About 6 months ago I began to get severe night sweats. This was weird as I had absolutely no other symptoms and felt fantastic. Went to the doctors and had extensive blood work done which came back perfectly clear. Sometime during the many blood tests I began to feel a sudden feeling of nausea so severe that I have to sit down. It has never caused me to throw up but the feeling generally lasts for between 20 seconds to 5 mins and always ends with a single sneeze. It is so embarrasing at work when this happens (generally 2 to 3 times a day).
Anyway, not long after the nausea started and during the tests, the night sweats stopped and I began to have stomach pains. Blood work started to show increase in enzymes produced by the pancreas. Doctor said I had pancreatitis. Suspecting stones I had xrays, ultra sound CT Scan and when these all came back clear they went in had a look and took a sample. Everything came back clear. After about 3 weeks the pancreatitis went, the sweats stopped and all I was left with was a doctor who told me I was so healthy I should expect to live a very long life and this rotten condition of acute nausea followed by a sneeze.
October 23, 2006 – Tracy:
I am a 40 year old woman that just came across this site today, I have had this for as long as I can remember,Yes ive had my share of illnesses but im healthy. I dont take any meds from a Doctor, My over the counter meds consist of Ibuprophen. I usually get it in the mornings, it dont go away with eating. Ive asked many of people about this and i get the same look everytime,(get the straight jacket). Like I said, Ive had this all my life it seems and its not daily but more of a few times a week. I would really like to know if I need to go get checked out for anything. It seems that all here posting have had thier shares of health issues.
November 3, 2006 – Shelley:
I have EXACTLY the same problem, and have been experiencing it now for several years. I’m a 31 year old female, no chronic medical problems aside from migraines, and the only medication I take is Cymbalta (90 mg) for anxiety. The nausea never actually makes me sick to my stomach — it just prompts a sneeze, but it’s extremely uncomfortable. To me, the nausea doesn’t feel exactly like nausea when my stomach is actually involved — I always know that the sneeze is coming and will relieve the sensation. Maybe that’s because it always has such a sudden onset (I’m fine one minute, feeling sick as a dog the next until I sneeze).
Would love to find out any more information about this very weird and irritating phenomenon.
November 14, 2006 – Deb:
I just started having this extremely deep nausea right before sneezing (relieving the nausea) in the past two weeks. While reading all these messages, I remembered that I just started taking a daily multivitamin with all sorts of stuff in it the last two weeks. I’m a bit overweight, but otherwise healthy. I’m a 22 year old biology student, and I’ve been really frustrated by these strange symptoms. Perhaps I’ll try some experiments with the vitamins. I’ll let you know if I discover any further correlation.
November 16, 2006 – Kaara:
I’m a 26 yr old female, and I have the same nausea/sneeze connection. I mentioned it to my husband, mother and sister the other night, and they looked at me as if I’d grown another head! I decided to Google it, and here I am….
I don’t get nauseous every time I sneeze, nor do I sneeze every time I get nauseous. Sometimes it feels as though I have a limited “control†over the reflex. For instance I can “hold out†past nausea and sneeze instead, if that makes any sense at all. It came in handy lots during my recent pregnancy. I didn’t have morning/night sickness. I was sick all day long! :)
I’m not on any specific medications, just herbal supplements to increase my milk supply, a tea for the same thing, and prenatal vitamins to keep my milk quality up.
I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one with this issue!! :D

Hi! I am 33 years old, and I too have the nausea/sneeze connection! It has been so weird not knowing anyone else with this problem. I first noticed it in my early twenties. It started at a time in my life when I first experienced anxiety problems- which were and have been diagnosed as “situational.â€
I have pretty bad allergies- my main symptoms are sneezing and itchy ears. I asked a doctor about it once, and though he didn’t really know, he assumed the nausea was caused by sinus drainage which is what I have vomited when it has happened, which isn’t very often. But this doesn’t explain why the nausea goes away after I sneeze! I can tell when I am done sneezing by whether the nausea goes away.
I am not diagnosed with any diseases. I am not on any medications. People have mentioned diabetes here. If anything, I have some issues with low blood sugar; I sometimes have dizzy spells from getting up too fast, and it is worse when I am thinner.
One guy theorized that when we need to sneeze it builds up pressure, and he thought the pressure could effect a nerve that could cause a nausea response…
November 19. 2006 – Jodine Rodway:
Hello all,
It is so wonderful that I have found this blog, I dont feel all alone. My symponms are slightly different than that of the others that have written. I too have a sun sneeze connection and have experienced this condition since childhood, I even can accomplish to create a sneeze by looking toward certain lights occasionaly. What is different about my condition is that not only does the nausea occur before the sneeze, it has now caused me to vomint directly afterwords. This has began to cause many problems for me as I have to pull the car over when I am driving on a sunny day for this to compleate each cycle. I dont have much warning, and the attacks range form mild to severe. I have even been awakened from sleep only to run to the bathroom to sneeze and then vomit.
My stats are: 37 year old female, in good health for the most part. I was however diagnosed with bi-polar effective disorder at the age of 12, (very young for this diagnoses)and re diagnosed several times since.I have been on a wide variety of psychairtric drugs over the years. I currently take effexor, valproic acid, lamotragin, daily.
I have had one pregnancy that failed when I was 22 years old, and that was followed by a d&c under general anastetic. ten years ago I was suffering some symptoms that have since dissipeared, thes were loosly thought of a simular to toses of Multiple Sclorosis. I have never had problems with my blood sugar or any type of cysts as some have also reported. I will continue to visit this site and follow the research that will sure to follow this unusual phenomemenon.
Good health to all, Jodine
December 15, 2006 – Karen:
I’ve always sneezed when going outside into the bright sun. I always thought it had to do with the way that I squinted. If I feel a sneeze coming on, if I look up at the light, whether inside or out, I am usually successful in getting that sneeze out.
I’ve only just recently started having acute nausea, and then having a “different†type of sneeze. Usually, I just sneeze once, but when I have one of these nausea triggered sneezes, I always have a very hard, double sneeze. Not two sneezes in a row, rather, I sneeze, and then without another second’s interim, I sneeze again. Immediately, the nausea abates.
I started metformin (glucophage) 850mg/2x daily a few weeks ago. I have taken this same medication before without sneezing. I also take a multi-vitamin, Omega3 Oil, and Oil of Oregano capsules. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which is the (off label) reason that I take metformin. I am overweight, but dieting. It was VERY noticeable once I started dieting (Atkins based) that the nausea/sneezing was a related phenomenon.
December 17, 2006 – Jody:
Me too! I have this sneezing/nausea thing (snausia??). I just googled “sneeze nausea†and I’m surprised to find others.
I’m a 38 year old woman. It started about 6 months ago. I feel extremely nauesated for a few seconds, sneeze, feel like I might vomit, then after a few seconds, the nauesa is gone.
I’m being treated for non insulin resistant PCOS, depression/anxiety, migraines and acid reflux. I also had mono about 10 years ago.
I take a LOT of meds: prozac, ativan, inderal, fiorinal, buspar, protonix, tetracycline and just started metformin last week.
I’m so thankful for any insight.
December 19, 2006 – Bonnie:
I do the same nauseated/ sneeze thing. I’m 36 and have noticed it since my late twenties. It tends to happen more when I am hungry.
December 19, 2006 – Lynda:
I am a 41 year old woman who also has the nausea and sneezing phenom. I also noticed it happens more when I am hungry.
Also, sometimes when I need to sneeze (like a tickle is in my nose), and it seems like I can’t get it out, I can look at a bright light (it can even be a lamp) and it will come out!
Interestingly, I noticed that a lot of the people posting here suffer from some of the same ailments as me, and we take some of the same medications; such as, I take Fluoxetine (generic prozac), Avalide (for high blood pressure), Provigil (for sleep apnea).
I am being treated for depression, acid reflux, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, I have been treated for migraines in the past, I am currently being monmitores for pre-diabetes as my sugar levels aren’t quite right. It doesn’t help any of these afflictions that I am obese, and weigh about 272 lbs and am 5 feet tall. Unfortuantely I haven’t always been this overweight, this has only been in the past 10 years that i have been this heavy.
December 20, 2006 – Rachel:
Hi,
I’m a 14 year old female and have the sneeze/nausea connection as well. It was so nice finding this blog and knowing i’m not the only one with this crazy phenomenon! I did see that I was the youngest on here that had it… I’ve told family and friends about this and they look at me like I’m crazy! I get very nauseous for anywhere from a few seconds to about five minutes & then I sneeze and the nausea is relieved, sometimes it takes a few simultaneous sneezes for the nausea to be completely relieved. I have noticed that this happens almost every time I’m hungry, but happens alot when I’m not as well. I’ve had this for at least a couple years, that’s when I first took notice of it anyway. I don’t have any health issues that I’m aware of besides my asthma.
December 21, 2006 – Karen_s:
Count me in as another who gets nauseated and then sneezes. After I sneeze I feel ok. It always happens in the morning and I just figured I was hungry. It is good to see I’m not the only one! I have another quirk but I’ll talk about it on my site so I don’t take up anymore space here. I love your blog.
Does it make us all weird that we encounter this phenomenon? Nope, we are special! Decaffeinated coffee experience and wondering if any others have it?
December 27, 2006 – RJ:
I’m a 30/M and have been experiencing this nausea/sneeze thing for about a year. I first attributed this condition to extreme dieting/training. I am a fitness trainer and I’m constantly dieting. I do share some medical conditions with the others who posted here. I have hypertension (not taking any meds…yet) and I have had several sebaceous cysts on my scalp. I’d very muck like to understand why exactly this occurs
January 3, 2006 – Paige:
Hi sneezers! I also experience something along these lines and wanted to share my story and knowledge.
About the bright light associated sneezing (â€photic sneezing†i think)- I’ve heard that the contraction of ones pupils in reaction to the light stimulates the nerves in the sinuses and often makes people sneeze. It seems like this is normal, and everyone I ask finds that glancing at a bright light helps them discharge their stuck sneezes. Many people also sneeze during eyebrow plucking, when they have debris in their eye, or other stimulus to the eyes. I’m convinced this is normal, and some are simply more sensitive than others.
The nausea-related sneezing is a little more cryptic. Personally, I have a gastric ulcer that causes me regular bouts of nausea anyway. It’s really bad when I am hungry and I often feel like I’m about to vomit if I don’t eat immediately. Usually, I end up sneezing instead just before I eat, or about halfway through the meal. It feels as if the sneeze aborts the nausea just before I lose my lunch (only usually). I also experience a false sense of fullness related to my nausea as well. Too nauseous to eat, but too nauseous not to eat. Does anyone else share this experience? Something I find that helps my nausea and its related sneezing is to eat small meals every couple hours. This way, my stomach is too busy digesting food to get empty and nauseous. Preventative feeding medicine, I guess :P
I am lactose intolerant and don’t eat dairy anymore. This eliminates the possibility of my sneezing being dairy-allergy related, but it might be worth it to cut dairy for a while just to see if allergies are your culprit. I also take Prozac for fibromyalgia and depression, like many of you on here. The health similarities you all describe are very interesting to me. I think this sneezing phenomenon will become one of my pet research projects in the future.
I’ve also found a couple journal abstracts on a dominant genetic phenomenon that causes people to sneeze when they become full; typically seen in men. Perhaps this describes a link between my too-early sensation of fullness and the sneezing too? (Only I’m not a man, but whatever.) So far, i can’t find any further documentation without paying for it – but I’m not going to stop looking just yet. I’ll try to post these if I find them.
I dunno, but its all very intriguing. If I can remember to keep checking this thread, I will. (Damn fibrofog makes me lose track of things sometimes) Also, there are posts on messageboards ALL OVER THE PLACE that I just discovered tonight of people saying they think they’re crazy because they get nauseous and sneeze (google: sneezing nausea). Someone should organize a website or something. Snausea.com anyone?
Good luck & keep snackin.
~Paige
January 5, 2007 – Peter:
I’m 42 and just started taking Tricore. My cholesterol is over 300 and my trigylcerides are over 300 as well. I have nausea before I sneeze and can’t drink any alchohol without throwing up later.
This is new phenomenon likely triggered by the new meds.
January 14, 2007 – William:
Just FYI: I’m a male, and I too feel a sudden wave of nausea just before I sneeze. So, no, it isn’t just woman who have experienced this.
January 17, 2007 – Kendra Ray:
I have also had this nausea/sneezing problem for the last several years, and I have only told a few people about it because it sounds so crazy. My sister found this website, and I couldn’t believe this happens to others! It started a few years ago. I have this sudden, horrible nausea followed by a sneeze and the nausea goes away. This happens almost every time I sneeze, and I have no idea why. I am a healthy 35 year old female and I really haven’t had any other medical or physical problems. I don’t take any medication, other than the occasional pain reliever. It is so bad sometimes I actually start running toward the restroom thinking I am going to get sick, and then once I sneeze it’s gone. It would be WONDERFUL to know why this happens, or if there is anything that can be done to prevent it.
January 17, 2007 – Jessie:
Hmm. My experience has been similar, but I’ve always put the cause and effect differently. I’ve noticed that very often, when I am nauseous, I sneeze and the nausea relents. My nausea is rarely as severe as others have described, and it does not always go away for good when I sneeze, it simply dissipates. I suppose I always thought of it like the bright lights; I don’t see bright lights just before I sneeze, I sneeze as a result of the bright lights.
I’m 22 (female) and the only medical problems I’ve had have been associated with acid reflux- I don’t take any regular medicine other than birth control.
January 27, 2007 – Arthur:
Did a google search for nausea and sneezing, and found your site. I’m surprised nobody seems to know the answer to this. Sometimes when I’ve not had enough sleep (after say 4 or 5 hours), suddenly, and for no apparent reason, I feel nauseous. It takes about 5 seconds for me to become aware of the nausea, then another 5 or 10 seconds for it to peak. Then I sneeze, and the nausea goes completely. The last time this happened (about 4 or 5 months ago), the sneeze didn’t come as quickly as it usually does, so I turned on the bedroom light and stared at the bulb. Et voila! I sneezed, and the nausea was gone!
This only started about 5 years ago. When I have the cold, I don’t feel nauseous before sneezing! I’m 29, on no medication, and very healthy!

hi…wow thankfully ive discovered this site.im a 41 yr old male and have been having the wave of nausea followed by a sneeze or two for about a year and a half now.i went for my physical and mentioned this to my doctor and told him that i thought it might have something to do with my sinuses but he checked and found nothing.i have severe osteoarthritis in the right knee and i was prescribed paxil after quitting drinking 2 years ago after being a heavy drinker.all my blood tests came back good and the liver functions enzymes are good again.i also found that this happens usually when i have an empty stomach although the nausea doesnt eminate from there.this is just an annoyance rather than a medical problem at this point but hopefully between all of us we will find out what it is we share in common that we have this “GIFTâ€â€¦lol
February 2, 2007 – Carol:
I mentioned this phenomenon of becoming very nauseated before a sneeze and my co-worker thought I was crazy. I explained that I first experienced this after my second pregnancy (age 27) and have had it ever since. It usually happens after taking my morning vitamins and it often takes 2 or 3 sneezes before the nausea completely goes away. The only medication I take is Synthroid for a thyroid nodule. It doesn’t happen every day and seemed especially worse when I started taking Anti-oxidants as well. As good as they are for me, I more often than not “forget†to take these in order to avoid the unpleasant nausea. It only lasts a minute or so but is powerful enough that I would rather avoid it! To get it over with faster, I will often look into bright light which usually helps me bring on a sneeze.
February 14, 2007 – Bud:
I also suffer from pre-sneeze nausea, even to the point of retching uncontrollably. I have noticed that this happens more often first thing in the morning than other times of the day.
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux) seems to be a common denominator here. That could also explain the vagus nerve involvement (hiatal hernia bumping up against the nerve?)
I am a 39 year old male with GERD. I have food allergies, but no respiratory ones. I take prilosec every day to treat extreme reflux disease. After reading these responses, I am beginning to think there is a link between GERD and what someone amusingly called “snausea†– or perhaps it is a side effect of common GERD medications?
February 14, 2007 – Tracy:
I do not have GERD, but I do have thyroid and parathyroid issues, something that keeps coming up here, too.
Since the endocrine system supplies the body with all it’s chemical reactions it seems to me that it is the root
February 15, 2007 – David:
This is amazing, I have been asking people about this and couldn’t find anyone who had any idea. I am a 51 year old male in good health. Slightly overweight, hay fever since my teens. I have been having the nausea (mostly in the morning) followed by a sneeze which takes away the nausea completely. I read somewhere on Health.com before I found this site, that GERD (gastroesophogeal reflux disease) may be the cause. That would make sense for me, as I have been taking Prilosec on and off for several years now. Hope this may help/relieve some. Thank you for this, I feel better already knowing I’m not alone.

Hi,
My fiance sneezes when he starts having erotic thoughts. We think it’s quite funny but I’ve been researching if there’s a name for this or to see if anyone else has the same reaction.
What info do you have on this?

Sorry for posting this again but I posted to the wrong blog :( sorry.
Hi,
My mom is 67. She started experiencing the Snausea about five years ago. She also did not realize how many others are experiencing this same issue unil I found this blog. I would like to mention some habits. Smoking/Coffee using splenda and the sneezing usually happens on an empty stomach.
She is a type two diabetic, high Cholesterol, High blood pressure, acid reflux and anxiety.
Medications: Vytorin, amitripyline, actos, Quinaretic, 81mg asprin, omeprazole daily. I have emailed discovery health to see if they can help out this this question as to why?
February 24, 2007 – John:
I am a 33 year old male who also experiences nausea before sneezing. I am very fit and muscular and do not have problems with GERD. However, thanks to “great†genetics, I have had VERY HIGH triglycerides (1500+) in the past, but medications seems to have them under control presently (
February 24, 2007 – Tracy:
One common link seems to be that EVERYBODY is on some kind of medication.
Perhaps the fillers used to make the medications are the source of the problem.
February 24, 2007 – Rick:
since posting my last i have been adjusting my eating habits to ensure that i have something in my stomach other than black coffee and sugar at all times during the day, when this usually occurs.after having snausea every few days for a year and a half,i experience NONE when i have several small snacks during the day be it an apple, kiwi fruit, energy bar or something else healthy.i went 2 days on purpose with my old eating habits and on the second day (they were not in a row) i had a snausea bout.i know that its a small trial period but im convinced that there must be something eminating from the stomach causing the sneezing although the nausea doesnt emit from there.i would love to hear from anyone who finds success with this at thomrick747@hotmail.com
February 25, 2007 – Mara:
I’ve experienced the nausea-sneeze thing for along time. And yes, folks think I’m nuts and the dr looks at me and says “huh†and that’s it. It seems to be something must cause it if all these folks experience it also. Seems some md type person should have some ideas, not yet I suppose?
I have a few ailments similar to others in that I have type 2 diabetes, insulin dependent, ataxia, seizures, depression, gallstones, sleep apnea… and I won’t go on with the gory details beyond that :o)
I take aLOT of meds, including for depression, diabetes, blood pressure, high cholesterol.
Still a mystery, however, I have a few things I want to look into after reading others’ replies..
I’m glad this thread is out here so we can share this interesting connection.

I’m 23 and have had the nausea/sneezing problem for as long as I can remember, even as a child. I have no major health issues and have never had any major surgeries. I do have mild allergies during warmer weather but nothing of real concern. My mother also has the exact same sneezing issue but not as often as I do. It happens to me a few times every week and I have just gotten used to it over the years. Although, I can say that I have never actually thrown up, I just always feel the sudden urge to (tense facial muscles, sudden weakness, salivation, etc.) but know that I won’t. It’s definitely interesting to see how common this is. I actually looked this up out of boredom and expected no search results. weird.
March 14, 2007 – Kate:
This nausea/sneeze thing happens to me as well. My details:
33. Mostly healthy but I have been diagnosed with hashimotos thyroiditis (nodes on thyroid and pre-hypothyroid). I take no daily medication. All in all I’m pretty healthy though I’ve been struggling with my fertility…stress and wonky hormones are a bad combo.
March 17, 2007 – Corey:
Count me as another nausea/sneeze “suffererâ€. It didn’t start happening to me until last year, but now it is pretty routine. To me honest, when I feel a wave of nausea, I typically expect to sneeze and most of the time I do. Weird. Like others, I thought I was the only one to experience this and expected to find absolutely no hits on the subject. I guess we’re all freaks together ;)

Medical factors: migraines, depression, anxiety

March 17, 2007 – Faith:
I’m a 23 year old female, currently on medication for depression and anxiety. I am on 25 milligrams of sertraline (generic Zoloft) every day, and I notice my snausea symptoms most in the morning. The nausea sensation is always very acute, almost making me feel dizzy. Afterwards, I’ll sneeze very hard, at least once. Usually it’s a double sneeze, so quick I can’t even breathe between them!
I would love, love, love to make this stop happening. I think I am going to try Rick’s idea of making myself snack during the day. However, my depression/anxiety medication severely hampers my appetite–any suggestions??

Hello,
I also experience the nausea-sneeze problem. Although, my nausea does not end with the sneezing. I usually sneeze a couple of times in a row soon after the onset of extremely severe nausea so debilitating I can do nothing but lie down and wait for it to pass. The nausea may last for up to three hours. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 18 months ago by accident. I went to my doctor for nausea, bloating, and constipation. I was later diagnosed with gastroparesis (slow digestion) and reflux. This vagus nerve damage usually occurs after having diabetes for 10 or 15 years. In my case, I know I haven’t had diabetes for too many years, because I have had blood tests at check-ups or prior to surgery over the years. I have also had 3 children, and I would think diabetes would have shown up during the pregnancies. I suspected some time of auto immune or connective tissue disease. My symptoms seem to fit. I had a cortisol test for suspected Cushing’s which was negative. I also had an arthritis panel done after my last doctor visit. I have not discussed the results with him, but his office called to say it was O.K.
I attribute my nausea to the digestive problems, but I’ve never been able to pinpoint specific foods that trigger it. I also take an array of meds which could be the culprit. The meds I take which may have nausea as a side effect, are taken twice daily and my nausea-sneezing occurs only after the first morning dose. It occurs with or without food, and not every day, but a few times a week. The sneezing is odd, but the nausea is so overwhelming it’s not my main concern, just something I’ve noticed.
I just wanted to add another 45 year old, Caucasian female with type 2 diabetes to your research. Feel free to add my stats to your blog. I will check back to see whatever you guys might uncover about this strange phenomenon. I’m going to mention this to my doctor when I see him in a couple of months. I expect the same eye rolling, what a hypochondriac you are, response from him! Thanks for your time.

OMG! I CAN’T BELEIVE THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE THAT THIS HAPPENS TO. It’s funny how I found this site. I had a “snausea attack” and decided to stop every thing I was doing and go to my computer. I typed “why do i sneeze when i’m hungry” into the search engine and voila, here I am.
I’m a 28 year old female, and currently taking medication for Bi Polar Disorder(manic depression). I take Sertraline(Zoloft) for the depression and Lamictal as a mood stabilizer to help with the manic episodes. I also take Rozeram to help me sleep(chronic insomnia) and Requip for RLS.
I have chronic pain(that can’t be explained). Example: Some doctors think it’s Fibromyalgia and others say Myofacial Pain Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has also been mentioned. I personally think that my OB/GYN has had the best diagnosis yet, which is ADRENAL FATIGUE.[if you suffer from chronic pain, i suggest researching adrenal fatigue(NOT chronic fatigue, two totally seperate things)which is caused by STRESS. We have all heard that stress can "kill" you, but you might be amazed at how true and serious this is.] I am also hypersensitive(light hurts my eyes, the slightest pressure on the arm, leg, etc. causes severe pain, can’t tolerate noise, and so on). I also suffer from migraines.
I have had just about every medical test there is to see what the problem is, but as you might know, nothing is ever “wrong”. Now back to the “snausea”.
I noticed this “snausea” thing about 6 to 8 months ago. It happens when I wait too long to eat and get hunger pangs so severe they cause a sudden onset of nausea and I sneeze atleast 2 or 3 times and usually very fast and very hard, then the nausea stops until the next sharp hunger pang, unless I eat, in which case I’m fine for awhile. When I tell my family and friends, they look at me like I’m a nut and laugh. I really thought I was the only person that this happened to. I’m releived to find so many others who have this same problem(simply because of the fact that now i know i’m not crazy); however, I’m also sorry for those who suffer from it because it really sucks. I also have sneezing fits when looking at real bright lights(usually the sun). I think this is called photic sneezing or something like that.
Anyway, ANY information on this phenomenon would be greatly appreciated. I don’t know if any medical doctors read any of this, but if you’re an MD and you have ANY information or a reason this happens, PLEASE PLEASE share with the rest of us.
I do, however, think that snacking to keep from getting so hungry you want to barf helps quite a bit.

I’m just checking in to see if anyone has any new ideas about the sneezing/nausea connection… I’ve wondered if this has to do something with artificial sweetners…I am curious to know if everyone that experiences this uses artificial sweetners on a regular basis. I am a regular Diet Dr. Pepper drinker and I’ve noticed that this seems to happen more when I drink them. It also happens more often if my stomach is empty. If anyone has any new info, I would love to hear it!

This is just so freaky! I too found your blog by looking up sneezing and nausea.
I am 31 and take no medications. I only started getting this sneeze/nausea thing about a year or two ago. It comes on fast and I know immediately what it is. And the moment I sneeze, the nausea immediately goes away. I thought it was just me because I would ask friends or family and they all thought I was a hypochondriac.
I hope someone figures this out cause it’s really annoying and I constantly wonder if I have some underlying medical issue which is causing this.

Hello I am a 20 yr. old male (I only recently turned 20) and I also suffer from “snausing”… or whatever. Today being the first time that I can remember this happening, and it has happened twice already. I have been known to use many diff. types of prescription and nonprescription drugs recreationaly, and often. Although I have been clean for around 2 days now. I have very bad problems with my stomach, anxiety, and depression. I am underweight and eat less often than the normal person.
I would like to thank Moof for providing such a great portal of information into this peculiar problem. I hope and Pray that someone out there (preferably more qualified than I am) finds some way to cure, or even relieve this horrible problem. Until then I believe that this string is a great start. I am excited about checking in on updates, and helping if needed.

Thanks all of you for sharing, nice to know I’m not alone.
My problem seems to be other way round from most of you,2-3 times a week I am awoken by the violent rapid double sneeze, then a wave of nausea that slowly abates. This has gone on for about 4 months. I am 51, 10kg over weight, traumatic arthritis from an auto crack up 20 years ago, environmental allergies (dust, molds). Only medication is pseudoephedrine.

After reading about how worried y’all other “SAN” folks are, I feel bad for you! I hadn’t thought of it as a problem, though, just something “interesting.” And I always feel so good afterward. I hadn’t even considered that some people would find it embarrassing or frightening. If I have to snauze around other people, I just explain afterwards. Turns out there are a lot of ashamed NAS sufferers (!), and my openness is akin to… NAS activism? :)
I first started saying “ugh…I have to sneeze!” about a year and a half after I started smoking. It used to happen almost exclusively in the morning right when I got up, but now it doesn’t– it maxes out at a dozen or so times a week, but at different times of day. Here’s something you may find interesting, too: Several months after I started having SAN, my partner of 6+ years began experiencing the same phenomenon!
We’re 25 year-old women. She recently started taking Paxil, while I’ve been on Effexor for a couple years. She is thin, I am fat. Neither of us have much of a medical history to speak of. We both smoke cannabis and tobacco (she smokes more tobacco, I smoke more cannabis).
A always assumed this was a result of some sort of respiratory distress, since it would happen in the morning when I might need to cough. But it never happened from a viral infection, and thick smoke doesn’t trigger it. It’s like something’s ticking a nerve somewhere in my upper respiratory system. Mostly I’m ticked because I came online to see why it happens, and it turns out that even though it’s very common, Medicine doesn’t know of a biological connection between nausea and sneezing. Hmph.

WOW! I can’t believe im not alone, its like im reading about my own condition. I have noticed for years that when im really hungry, and let the hunger get to the point where i am so hungry i get nauseaus, then i will feel like i could either sneeze or vomit, and at that point i usually sneeze, but sometimes i puke and thats very unpleasant especially when you are at work. Like the rest of you people look at me like im a freak when i tell then about this condition. I was going to ask how many of you notice that they are hungry when this phenomena occurs?

Hi
I am woman, 55 years. Experienced this for many years.
I am dianosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, neorogenic and vascular. Have had surgery for this, giving some relief of many of my symptoms.
Also have restless leg syndrome and hypermobility which has given problems with seveal joints over the years. Furthermore depression/anx.
Have (before discovery of TOS)been suspected for MS, Fibromyalgia, cronic fatique – you name it.
Have many symptoms which could connect to the vagus nerve: Heart skipping beats. Sick if eating early in the day, unequal pupils, weard sensations in ear, choking drinking fluids, hoarsness, etc. Have given up mentioning this to doctors, they only lift their eyebrows???
I found this site when looking for connections to the vagus nerve, and i am sure, this sneeze/nausea problem has something to do with an irritation – in my case in the thoracic inlet/outlet (brachial plexus) But I am seeking some medical evidence. Hope somone eventualy will see the light :0)
Medication:
Antidepressants
Sifrol ( dopamin-antagonist for RLS)
Kodeine (pain)

I didn’t know that others had this delema. I have never told anyone about this. It is only my husband and children that know. I am 43yo caucasion female. I have had this sneezing/nausea problem as an adult which began in my late twenties.
I am completely healthy, I have never been diagnosed with any problem whatsoever. I have always competed in sports and been made aware that while I have a physically strong body, my internal system is very delicate as I can faint when too hungry, get headaches and vomit when hungry. I am currently pregnant and have had various tests done to make sure that I am healthy and all tests come back normal. No past surgery, no cysts, I don’t even get a cold or flu very often.
I look at this as a “signal” and a possible borderline hypoglycemic problem that is not severe enough to be diagnosed. All of these so-called problems that I have (i.e. headache, fainting & sneezing/nausea) are all related to waiting too long to eat-for me. It is inevitable that if I sneeze, I will start to feel nauseous and I intellectually know that it has been hours since I have eaten. The same is true for my headaches, all that I have to do is to make sure that have a steady flow of food approximately every two to three hours and I have zero symptoms.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
This happens to me! I get a very sudden wave of nausea that is similar to how I feel when I get very hungry and my blood sugar drops. Unlike that though, this comes on very quickly and without warning. Then about a minute later I sneeze once or twice and the nausea almost instantly clears up.
I have a lot of acid reflux, and have some issues with maintaining my blood sugar (although nothing too serious). I get nauseas very easily, especially if I don’t eat.
My dad has Barrett’s syndrome, aka Barrett’s esophagus. That is when acid and digestive enzymes from the stomach irritate the cells lining the esophagus and is a pre-cancerous condition. My symptoms don’t include heartburn, but they are very similar to what my dad describes
I would love to know what the heck is going on!
April 16th, 2008 at 7:56 am
I too have experienced the nausea followed by a couple sneezes then the nausea disappears. I believe I have food allergies but these episodes happen to me in the morning usually after a cup or two of coffee (black) and on an empty stomach. I actually find it difficult to eat in the morning but this is a lifelong habit. I feel a wave of nausea followed by 2 hard sneezes and my sinuses usually drain afterward. I’ve had many medical conditions but nothing I can associate with this except maybe allergies, no tests have ever been performed to diagnose this but have been prescribed allergy medication although I still wonder if I just have sinus problems.

I am so glad I found this site! I have been dealing with very intense, but brief nausea, relieved by 1 or 2 really intense sneezes. I am 36 yrs. old. I have had mono sometime in the last 6 mo. without knowing it at the time (showed up on bloodwork results), resulting in chronic fatigue. Also have mitral valve prolapse, have had a number of fibroid cysts removed. I am very careful about what I eat, don’t consume caffeine, etc., am not overweight. The only prescription I take is birth control. This sneezing thing began sometime after I had the mono. I hope somebody has an answer to all of this, but I am relieved to know I am not crazy!
June 9th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
My ENT doc diagnosed acid reflux.
As shocked and resistant as I was at first, I now see he was right. Read on the esophageal sphincters, think of what you’ve eaten or if you’ve not eaten… Smoking is also a trigger.
July 6th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Wow. I’ve been meaning to search this for ages, but thought it was me just being a bit weird. I’ve been sneezing when I’m too hungry for years. Sometimes, the sneeze is so intense, I get the most horrible pains that shoot down my arms and legs. That doesn’t happen every time, but when it does, the pain lasts about 5 or 10 seconds. The sickness is awful too, but goes almost instantly on eating something, maybe a biscuit or whatever. I’m not on any medication, but recently had my gallbladder removed after years of suffering from that. My doctor had been treating me for acid reflux with proton pump inhibitors for years. I was hoping that some of my digestive weirdness would clear up after the operation, but no. The pain I was getting from my gallstones has gone, but still getting nausea and sneezing craziness! Good to know I’m not alone anyway….
July 27th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
I am a 26 year old woman who has been experiencing sneeze related nausea for many years. However- I do not believe that it has anything to do with medication because I have never been on any type of perscription. The closest that I come to medication is smoking weed and even that does nothing for the nausea I get before sneezing.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
I thought I was the only one that got nauseated before sneezing.I am a 31 year old female. I have been diagnosed as having low blood sugar and PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) I have had surgery to remove cysts of both ovaries. The nauesa comes about 2 mins before I sneeze and goes away after sneezing. It was worse during my pregnancy.
August 13th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Hi, what a relief to find this message board! Just this evening on the way home from work, I was describing to my wife how nauseous I feel right before I sneeze. Like my doctor, she thought I was crazy. She suggested that I google “nausea-triggered sneezing,” which is how I found you.
I have had “snausea,” as you call it, for the past 15 years. It used to strike without rhyme or reason (4 or 5 times per year); however, it seems to have increased to 4 to 5 times PER MONTH, since I began taking the SSI-class drug, Lexapro.
I am hypertensive, controlled by medication and take Lipitor for cholesterol. The Lexapro (for anxiety) is the only new factor since my snausea has increased.
Where does one go for help when medical providers do not see a cause for this “snausea?” Does one simply live with it, or is it somehow manageable? When I feel nauseous, I look at the sun to make myself sneeze. Once I sneeze, the nausea immediately dissipates.
Sometimes I will feel nauseous, but do not feel a sneeze coming on, and do not know why I am nauseous. Within a few minutes, I will sneeze and feel better. Strange.
Again, how do people with snausea manage it? Or do I have to induce sneezing for relief? Please reply.

I have the nausea sneeze problem also. If is always in the morning when I am drinking my tea with splenda and taking my vitamins. I think I will try eating my breakfast first, and then taking my vitamins on a full stomach and see if that takes care of the problem. I was very happy to find this web site. I am going to the doctors in October and was planning on telling her, and see if she has any solutions. I will keep you informed.
September 10th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
wow…thought I was the only one. I am 62 year old female. Had a failed spinal fusion 3 years ago which put me on meds..morphine, Tramacet, celexa for depression and sleeping meds. The nausea/sneezing only started about 6 months ago and usually only when I’m in bed. Really weird and overwhelming sensation. I am also seeing my doctor this month and will ask for solutions. will stay in touch.
It’s good to know you’re not alone…or crazy.
September 11th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Hi Everyone,
I had finally had it with not knowing where this was coming from and never having met anyone else who deals with it, so I did a web search and I’m happy to find this site!
Very oddly perhaps, like the last poster, Sharon, I had a spinal fusion years ago and was put on Morphine for recovery – don’t know if there is some connection there. I am a 30 year old woman and I can’t remember how long this has been happening to me, but I do think that maybe it has only been in adulthood, so maybe only since my spinal fusion although I have never thought to connect the phenomenon to that.
I have recently experienced an interesting development. I always thought that the phenomenon was strictly related to the sneezing, not the nausea. I thought that the nausea was my mind playing tricks on me since I experienced nausea before sneezing, which was alleviated by the sneezing, but when nausea came before vomiting, it was real nausea, (obviously!).
Anyway, the recent development is that I found out in the past few weeks that I am pregnant. I am now in the “morning sickness” stage, so I have been experiencing nausea every day. The weird thing is that it will build for a half hour or so, and then I’ll sneeze, and that will make the nausea go away! It then starts building again after I sneeze. This is really weird because it leads me to believe that there is a correlation in BOTH directions – both from nausea to sneezing AND from sneezing to nausea… similar to a crossed wire!
Any thoughts on this?
I’m interested to hear.
October 3rd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
A couple of years ago I began getting nausea followed by one sneeze. I asked my naturopath about it and she theorized that it may have something to do with low blood sugar. I have metabolic syndrome and several other health problems, so I take a lot of meds, which might also contribute to this phenomenon. I also think the theory of allergens producing the nausea which then triggers a sneeze makes sense.

Hi Everyone,
I was on the blog in August. I was having the sneeze/nausea problem back then. I read all the blogs and decided to eat my breakfast before I took any medications. So far so good. I have not had the problem since then. Hope this helps.

Oh my god – I am so pleased to have found you all….
I am a 36 year old femaale with no real medical history to speak of and no regular medications.
I get this on a regular basis and when I try to explain to others they think I’ve gone mad !!! After 10 years m husband is now realising this is something real and not just in my head…
I have always associated this with hunger… affectionately calling it “my hunger sneeze” and following it with “I need food!!”
The nausea before the sneeze is quite overpowering and then clears when I’ve sneezed (often sneezing a number of times in one go) … It will repeat happening getting worse and more frequent until I eat something. This morning I had a yoghurt and normality is returned…..

I also have snausea.
I’m 30\M, on no meds with no known health issues. About 2 times a week I get a nauseaus within a minute of getting out of the shower in the morning. Nausea lasts for only a few seconds, then I sneeze, and feel fine again. I do usually have an empty stomach. I’ve had this for as long as I can remember, at least since my mid teen years. I also have the sneeze when entering bright light thing. Most of my sneezes are normal with no nausea, just gets me in the morning.

I’m so glad I found this site. I have long wondered what is causing the nausea that is followed by a hard sneeze. I’ve always thought that the process was rather funny, and it makes me laugh when it happens. I’m weird. Anyway, I believe that it may be related to being hungry in my case. It only seems to happen in the mornings before I have eaten.
This is so funny!

I am a “snausie”. Have been for about 2 years now. Anytime I brought this up to anyone…they thought I was crazy. I began to think that maybe I was. I recently asked my friend who is a nurse if she had heard of it. She said that she wasn’t sure, and that I should see my doctor. Instead…I googled. She’ll be so proud. Hah.
But anyways, I’m a 31-year-old healthy female. I’m not on any medications and occasionally take xanax when I get anxious. Just a few times a year. I have no medical conditions, my labs are great and I feel good (except I currently have a head cold).
I think that this normally probably happens near lunch at work. I has happened at other places/times, but most commonly at work. Maybe because I’m there so often.
I will begin to feel extremely nauseous (I even dry heaved a few weeks ago) and within a minute I have a very violent sneeze that leaves me feeling so much better. The nausea is gone. My body has no left over effects.
I’m “feeling” this hunger/snausea theory. I’ll have to pay more attention to when it happens to get a better idea. Now, I never remember feeling hunger while this is happening, so maybe it is a blood sugar thing.
I thought I was alone in this strange phenomena, I’m glad I’m not! We should start a support group! I’m a snausie…now hear me sneeze! ;)

Re: Nausea/Sneezing;
A symptom I have frequently while not suffering from sickness and not on ANY medication. Can you explain that?
March 6th, 2009 at 12:00 am
Add me to the list. The nausea/sneeze connection started for me about 2 years ago when I was 38. I am overweight, have high cholesterol and fluctuating blood pressure & blood sugar issues and bouts of anxiety and depression which I blame on stress. I was taking Lipitor, Lexapro and Yasmin when I first noticed the snausea.
Like many of you, I also notice the nausea more when I am hungry – it reminds me of the horrible morning sickness I had when I was pregnant. But unlike morning sickness, with this, as soon as I sneeze I get relief. I am not embarassed or affected negatively by it (other than the feeling like I have to puke thing), but I’m very curious as to what the connection could be. I have to remember to ask my dr about it.

I am a 29 year old female. I have no past medical history, but I am currently pregnant with my first child! It’s wonderful except for the terrible nausea I’ve had during this first trimester. I’ve definitely noticed when my nausea worsens, I have these crazy violent sneezes that may or may not help with the nausea. I was online to see if there was a connection- and I’m a nurse practitioner! I’ve never heard of it. Anyway, great to hear about everyone else’s experience- personally and professionally.

Add another male. 55 now but first experienced the snausia about 15 years ago. Would happen only a few times a year. Its now almost daily but thyroid and other complaints keep my insides pretty angry now. The vagus nerve theory makes sense to me as does the association with the pancreas. I sure hope people post up-dates here as they learn more or conditions develope. Thanks for the web hosting–it is nice to find others that know what its like.

I am 32 years old, have severe allergies to dust and ‘regular allergies’ to cats, dogs, pollen & ragweed. I’ve been on Zyrtec ever since it came out.
I always sneeze quite a bit with allergies, but have noticed in the past 6 months that I feel like I may vomit, but then it’s just a sneeze. It’s gotten worse, but I’ve always sneezed after, never actually vomited.
I have absolutely no medical conditions other than allergies, but diabetes and thyroid issues run in the family.
My husband believes me but thinks I’m a little nuts when I have to suddenly sit down cause I feel sick. I plan to mention this to my doctor at my next appointment out of curiousity.
I’m glad I’m not the only one. It took me over an hour just to find this one site!
May 6th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
I had a post on this website about a year ago, dealing with the “snausea” issue. The problem stopped after I switched multivitamins. Wierd!
May 29th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
I too have the sneeze/nausious connection, it doesn’t happen too often and it is quite a relief when it does. Sometimes I have been through a nausious faze and have yearned for a good sneeze but it hasn’t come… now i will try the looking at a bright light or sun idea.
Recently the syndrome reversed & I had hard sneezes and then nausiousness… hmmm
I’m sure glad I found this site on google… actually I started looking for sneezing & eyes… I had sneezed today and my eyesight changed… it was weird it lasted for about 1/2 hour… I had kind of like a fractile vision thing going on… no pain just a weird shadowy thing going on…
anyway… glad to run across this… wila

I am another with this strange irritating condition. Mine started last June 2008, I was under lots of stress and just thought that was how my body was dealing with it. After a few months, some stress went away, it went away, then come mid June 2009, here it is all over again, and I have none of the stress that I did last summer. I am a healthly female, 36 years old, no meds, no illness, I did have gastic bypass 7 years ago, but have maintained my weight loss. This whole thing is so irritating and people look at me like I am crazy when I tell them about this symptom. I did have one person say it maybe a seasonal allergy, which makes the sinus drain, which inturn makes me feel sick. I sneeze and it goes away. This is just so strange, and I sure hope it goes away, I just feel like crap all the time, like at the beginning of a pregnancy, but I am not prego for sure.

Ok – I have this thing. I don’t have it so bad that it really bothers me like some. Sure, I don’t like the VERY nauseas feeling I get when I’m in the throws of hunger, but once I sneeze and it’s gone, I’m relieved! I have had it at least since college (1999). I have no outstanding medical conditions. Back in college I was not overweight, of course, I am now. I can find no correlation to the thing. Some web sites suggest it ties into cancer (!) or diabetes (!!!) – please be careful to say that. A lot of worried people out there.

hello all.
i am 29 and pregnant. i always have a bout of the sneezes accompanying my “morning” sickness. however, this isn’t the only time i have sneezed because of my nausea. whenever i have felt nauseous, especially if hung over from a night out before, i would sneeze.
the sneezes did not alleviate the morning sickness, just were a tell-tale sign of how i was feeling for those who knew me. i had never heard of anyone experiencing thing, but talked to my mom when i first found out i was pregnant and she said she had experienced the same thing during her morning sickness.
its not bothersome, just wondering what the connection would be. surprised with how many people have been posting on various websites that a study hasn’t been initiated!!

I appreciate with your beautiful blog.
Thanks for share your experience with your article, it’s very helpful and make me get more info.

just to follow-up on what someone else said about changing vitamins. I noticed in the past that “colored” vitamins tend to make me nausious. so I switched to “plain” non-colored… especially no red dyed pills… it helps ingeneral with nausiousness and always try to take vits with tea or coffee and at least a cracker or something… Also on a side note water can be an issue for me… even one sip of regular tap water makes me heave so i always have filtered water. Neither of these things is related to the nausious/sneeze syndrome but just an observation about other sensitivities that i encounter that can cause nausiousness
January 20th, 2010 at 4:35 am
oh.. wow. im relieved, because now i know im not CRAZY!!! IT DOES HAPPEN TO OTHER PEOPLE!!! yay!! (sorry).. people, i have had this all my life. im not on any meds, blood work is just fine, im normal.
what happends with me is i’ll feel extremely hungry, then within 5 or so minutes ill get really sick and weak.. then i sneeze and i feel better and go on like nothing ever happened. its weird. no other person in my family believed me and my nannas a NURSE! everybody kept telling me i was nuts and laughed or told me im strange, even my bf tells me im crazy…”no one has that, thats not even real”. when id get hungry-sneezes id lie and say allergies.. but now i feel kind of better, because im not alone and not strange.
also on the water sensitivity, i cant drink water untill like 3 hours after iv gotton up in the morning, coz it makes me very sick and dry reach. tap water tastes strange to me.
so yeah… im in your boat dude.. This editorial is mad. and very helpful. thank YOU!! XOXO

Hi! Me too!

grave’s disease

Glad I’m not alone ;)
Hope someone will figure this out!

I am up to about 5-10 sick sneezes a day now. Also GRD and morning meds have me convinced of a digestive problem aggravating the vegas nerve. The Navy used to use a couple saltines to calm a bad belly-Im going to try that and see if keeping the belly happier helps.

Me too! I am Male, 40yrs. I have dealt with this for as long as I can remember. I have a associated this with being hungry more so than nausea, but I guess they feel about the same. I have never vomited, but have had the sneezing come on when looking at a light bulb or the sun. However, I don’t stare at lights or the sun very often, so it might happen more often if I did.I usually experience two rapid sneezes although lately one big one seems to do the trick. Once I sneeze the sensation of hunger goes away, sometimes I eat right after sometimes I don’t. It is most common in the early A.M. just before getting out of bed. Except when sleeping I do not go long without eating. Hey, I like food! No, I am not super fat.
I do not take any poisons (I mean medications)and have not been diagnosed with anything (can that really be done within a few minutes while being ushered to the door?). My father was bi-polar. I have never met anyone who experiences this or knows someone who does. I have met someone who knew of someone who sneezed after eating too much. My brother in-law coughs after eating too much.
March 4th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
35 year old man, fit on no medications. I have experienced the nauseau before sneezing for as long as I can remember as well as the lights making me sneeze or at least helping to get a sneeze unstuck. I had never mentioned my condition to anyone before until I mentioned it to my current partner who is a nurse and he said as soon as I mentioned my strange nausea before sneezing it was probably the vagus nerve being stimulated. It is pretty rare from what I have heard but not uncommon. From what I have read my guess is that some of us have very sensitive Vagus nerves that are stimulated by something causing the nausea and then the sneeze which releaves the nausea. I also should note that my sneezes are very strong and I have been known to actually let out a scream type noise when sneezing…

25 yr old female, chronic sprain/strain of the neck and upper back shoulder area (3+ years) hypothyroid, GERD. I have been experiencing morning nausea (NOT PREGNANT) for years now, I would say I noticed it first when I was a teenager. I was never one who wanted to eat breakfast becuase I always felt so nauseous. Anyway, currently I wake up in the morning around 9am (I notice if I get up too early, or earlier than normal I am way more nauseous) and take my levothyroxine, prilosec, and a multi-vitamin. I then wait 30-60 minutes to eat breakfast. The nausea can start before or after I have taken my meds, sometimes lasts up to 30 minutes, and is relieved by a single large sneeze. I always sneeze when the nausea is at its worst. I am just about to run to the bathroom to throw up and then I sneeze, and the nausea is gone. I am sooooooo curious as to why this happens! The nausea can be really bad sometimes and can include dizziness and lightheadedness. For this reason I dislike morning.

I am a 34 year old male. My Nausea/Sneeze issue has been with me since I was a teenager. It starts for me with a slight feeling of Nausea, that builds to a point where I have to usually excuse myself from public. I begin to break out in a cold sweat. Within about 15 seconds I manage to sneeze, instantly getting relief from the nausea. I do however have an effect that stays with me for up to a minute, the cold sweat changes to a hot flash of sorts. I get flushed then pale during the episode. My doctors look at my like I am crazy, however according to my mother, she also has these episodes.
March 30th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
I just turned 29 this month. I have been having this problem for about 6 months now. I’m taking zoloft, xanax, and and sometimes allergy meds. I have had about 40 kidney stones scene the age of 13 and chronic URIs. When I was younger the doctor told me I have high cholesterol but never found out if it was bad cholesterol or good. Which I don’t understand because I weigh about 105 and eat pretty good. I have just started taking omega 3 and D3 quite a bit hoping something will help. I don’t know what to do… All I know is that when I feel it coming I can’t help it I have to lay down sometimes run to the bathroom, just in case!
March 30th, 2010 at 8:26 pm
UTIs lol… not URIs :)
April 2nd, 2010 at 11:09 am
I just realized something. I said this started about 6 months ago. I started taking the zoloft and zanax in December. I don’t know if this has to do with the problem or if it’s just a coincidence.

Found this…
http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Undiagnosed-Symptoms/Feeling-nausea-before-sneezing/show/534535
“Sneeze associated nausea is a somewhat uncommon symptom of acid reflux disease and gastritis. Nausea is a common symptom of gastritis, which is inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach. Gastritis also causes increased acid and gas formation causing acid reflux.
Acute gastritis also stimulates a nerve called the Vagus nerve. This nerve carries sensation from all the internal abdominal organs as well as from the throat and respiratory tract. In gastritis, the Vagus nerve gets irritated. One of the symptoms of acute gastritis is nausea – this is also the time when the irritation of the nerve is the most. This irritation is carried on to the organs supplied by the nerve, Since the nasal mucosa is the most sensitive of the tissues it supplies, this gets irritated too. Irritation causes sneezing and this helps in decreasing the irritation of the Vagus nerve to some extent.
Sneezing also increases the pressure inside the chest, acid reflux is prevented and nausea decreases.”
April 12th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
This is as good a reason as any that I have heard. However, my condition contains Zero connection to any Acid Reflux or Gastritis. I have no symptoms of indigestion, or heartburn at all. I do however notice that my Nausea/sneeze incidents do increase if I am hungry. sometimes the upset stomach is kicked of by hunger pangs or rumbling.
April 13th, 2010 at 10:57 am
I’m a 30 year old female with pretty much no health maladies, i’m not on any medication (except birth control and a daily vitamin – both which I’ve been taking far longer than 6 months). I’ve been experiencing the nausea/sneeze phenomenon for about 6 months to varying degrees both before I’ve eaten and afterwards, but always in the morning.
Some days the wave of nausea will be very short and very intense, and other days it will be mild and last nearly an hour before I sneeze and immediately feel relief, and then I’m fine for the rest of the day.
I never worried much about it until my new office neighbor told me that it’s not normal!
April 13th, 2010 at 1:58 pm
Update: After a few days on the Nexium I am convinced that many complaints can be treated with this drug. I think that people with fibromialgia complaints and any number of other pains may find a benefit from this drug that treats GRD. Ive found that less than half the normaly prescribed dosage seems to clear up not only the indigestion and acid reflux but pains all over my body and-maybe-the snausia. (M Age 57-Ive had snausia over 10 years-hypothyroidism found 6 yrs ago-all kinds of complaints usual with autoimune disease come and go. Been scoped from all directions. I drink beer and also suspect some pancreatitis at times.)

25 yr old male live in central NJ. I have server Psoriasis since age 17. I have had this same problem since at least age 13. Out of the blue I feel very ill then I sneeze and it vanishes. It happens randomly at any giving time.

I’m a 19 year old female from canada, I’ve recently suffered from this same problem. It’s not very frequent but it has happened about 3 times in the last month that I can think of and I’ve always thought it was very bizarre. But other than this I’m healthy, not on any medications and don’t have any other symptoms :S

I am almost 21, female, from Long Island, NY. I noticed this maybe 6 years ago. I am on no medication (I try not to even take an advil), though I am an alcoholic and smoke pot. These sneezes ONLY happen to me if the nausea is caused by hunger. The only time it happens for any other reason (ex: my drinking, motion sickness) is if I haven’t eaten in over a day. History:
When I was 2 years old, they found a urachal cyst. They had to do an experimental surgery on me, where they connected it to my bladder and it stopped growing. I was told that I never have to worry about it again.
On-and-off eating disorder. A little and a lot of everything. Sometimes there is no recovery, just binging. As young as 7, I was obsessed with my weight. At that time, it was only excessive exercise and picky-eating. When I got a little older was when I actually started starving myself. I believe that this is what caused me to realize this. As soon as my stomach started the loud grumbling, I would get unbelievably nauseous. It was always followed by a sneeze.. usually more than one. I never minded this. The nausea was my goal, it told me that my fat was eating itself. The sneeze was just something funny, and when I asked anybody if this happened to them, they all thought I was crazy. Glad to have found you guys.
I saw on here that someone else had night sweats. I sweat my brains out when I sleep. My doctor said that it might be caused by my asthma. I rarely ever use my inhaler, but when I did, it didn’t seem to change.
Also, I saw that a lot of people on here had diabetes.. I got tested for it around last year, and have had this problem long before that.
So that’s out.. but.. maybe we should focus on our diets.
What about aspartame?
June 8th, 2010 at 10:48 am
I am 21 years old, and this happens to me allll the time. I was cracking up after reading some of these. It is nice to hear I’m not alone. As many said, when I tell someone about this… they laugh and tell me I’m weird..or something along those lines. It’s like they dont believe me.
This has been happening to me since I was about 19. I had some bloodwork done, but I never mentioned the sneezing. I have hypoglycemia, so I need to eat throughout the day or I will get nauseous and I’ll get headaches and hot flashes.
Also, when I was 19, I lost a bunch of weight. Im 5′8, and I went from 150 to 120(I had tried losing weight before, but no matter how much I ate or worked out..I would stay the same weight) I was never big at all, but I was never super thin either. Now, I can literally eat ANYTHING I want, whenever I want, and I dont gain a pound.
This sneezing thing happens quite often, and only in the morning. I get sooo nauseous, but right when it gets so bad that I feel like I’m going to throw up I sneeze…and it’s better!
Ive always thought it was tied to the hypoglycemia.
I would lovvvvve to know whats going on with my body!

I am a 19, almost 20 year old female from Portland Oregon and this phenomenon has been occuring to me for the past several years, possibly longer. The first few times that I remember of this happening was the morning after drinking and having a hangover. I would get a wave of nauseousness and then I would suddenly get a few quick bursts of sneezing, and the nauseousness would be temporarily cured. Sometimes this would happen to me if I waited too long to eat and I would get nauseous from the lack of food in my stomach. It doesn’t really bother me at all, sometimes I actually try and make myself sneeze for the relief. I don’t see it as a “problem” i’m just curious as to why it happens. I am also now about 7 weeks pregnant, and have been getting nausea from the morning sickness, similar to the times of being hungover and/or lack of eating.
I have never brought this up to a doctor or anything, just because I never really thought of it as a problem that needed attention. I only started looking it up because I was curious if there were others out there that had this happening to them. I’ve told some friends and family and they all just say it is probably just some weird way of my body relieving the nausea, which seems like the case, but I wonder if it has to do with anything else. I also have had acid reflux for the past few years, and I do smoke pot (well, I quit as soon as I found out I was prego). I also read a few other posts suggesting night sweats which happen to me occasionally, but not every night. Probably around 2-3 times a week, sometimes less.
To me, it sounds like a completely random occurence, because there are many different age groups of people posting on here, with many different ailments and/or diseases. Although, the one thing that seems to connect the most is acid reflux. Maybe this is what it all comes down to?
Anyway, I was just curious and thought I would post my story. Good luck to the rest that wish this phenomenon away, but it doesn’t bother me all that much!

I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS HAPPENS TO OTHER PEOPLE!!
i have repeatedly tried to explain it to friends and family but they just think i’m a weirdo! i get completely confused between the feelings of needing to sneeze, vomit, cry or eat. i get the ’snausea’ feeling come over me along with a sudden sadness and brace myself incase i vomit or burst into tears. mostly it ends in a sneeze! but it also probably means i’m hungry so i eat too. when i do vomit i always cry at the same time, not because it’s distressing! just because the feelings all seem to be linked in me. i have noticed this confusion between feelings happening for the last couple of years. i am a 27 year old female and i have been taking fluoxetine 40mg for 5 years and more recently cymbalta.
June 20th, 2010 at 8:20 am
oh! and i have night sweats too! and sleep paralysis…
June 30th, 2010 at 5:59 pm
Finally, I find more sufferers of this strange occurrence :o
I am 22 year old caucasian female, and so far, this sudden nausia and the need to sneeze every time I have any kind of stomach issue is the only medical issue I’ve had, and it has been around my entire life. I’m on no medications, and the doctors have not found any reason for my chronic stomach problems. Sneezing also doesn’t seem to make it better, but I do get multiple sneezing attacks when I feel nausiated or hungry.
The only thing that has seemed to relieve the problem is THC, it allieviates the nausia, but I still get the sneezing problem even when I get the munchies. It’s so frustrating!
July 5th, 2010 at 10:37 am
YES i do get this! I, along with everyone i’ve ever told thought i was crazy! THANK GOD IM NOT!!! The first time i was landscaping, it lasted about 3 hours till i eventually vommeted!

YES i do get this! I, along with everyone i’ve ever told thought i was crazy! THANK GOD IM NOT!!! The first time i was landscaping, it lasted about 3 hours till i eventually vommeted! It was very hot i thought i had a heat stroke! today i have it again, also a very hot day. I am not taking any medecations just vitamins and fenugreek because i am nursing. both times happened on an empty stomach and in the heat.. ???
July 6th, 2010 at 2:41 pm
For me this is pregnancy related. When pregnant, if I wait too long to eat, I sometimes sneeze violently but just once. Or, if I have waited too long to eat and then start eating, sometimes will sneeze while eating. It seems related to low blood sugar or my body telling me I need to eat or something??? Doesn’t seem related to medication, although I am taking a multivitamin. I also take that when nursing and don’t do this then. I don’t have nausea associated with it, but I wonder if the others here who experience nausea related to it have waited too long to eat and need to eat more often? That is how it seems for me.
July 11th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
I just suffered from a nauseated sneeze attack so i decided to see if anyone else has the same problem which it turns out that they do. I have told my doctor about this condition and he had nothing to say. I am now stuck on what to do, i do have a lot of stress in my life and i also have had one of my thyroid glands removed due to a nodule on my right thyroid. I have suffered from this for about 4 years or so.

Very helpful article and a great site. Been looking for good informational websites like mine with relevant info to share with others and this is definitely going to be one of them! Thanks!

Lynn, I always remove spam comments … like the one you just dropped here. Even so, I decided to leave yours up, because it goes to what seems to be a good website …
However, I’ve got to say that you used a really rotten way to advertise such a place … spam! If you’d just emailed me and asked for a link, you’d have made out a lot better.

I get this too. I’m 36, and I believe it started when I turned 30ish. I’ve never been pregnant, nor do I take meds. I’m a regular gal, but what I have noticed is that I’ll get this symptom in the morning, after several cups of coffee on an empty stomach (sometimes I exercise in the morning, this morning I had it happen and I did, in fact exercise this morning). Perhaps there is hunger there, but not to the point that it registers with a growl; usually there is some awareness of ‘acid’ in the stomach which makes sense (though i don’t get reflux) that an empty stomach, plus coffee would result in acidy stomach feel. I am really glad that this site is out here. I have asked many people in passing, asked a naturopath today, and no luck. Please contact me if I can serve as a research participant if it comes up. Thanks.

I thought I was the only one who suffered from this symptom until I stumbled upon this site. I think I first started noticing this odd experience when I was in my mid twenties. I’m now 51 and still occasionally have it. Sometimes I may go for months without having it but just today I had two of them right when I sat down to eat. I was very hungry but am not sure if that had anything to do with it. These symptoms seem simple enough to where a Doctor should be able to figure out what may be causing them.
