It’s NOT the Sahara
Yesterday, Maine had its coldest day on record for the date - ever. Here in the Berwicks, we had a high of 5℉, a negative number low, and wind chills down around -15℉.
I hear that up on Mt. Washington, they went outside and threw buckets of hot water into the air - which instantly came back down as snow.
Now that is cold!
The photo you see to your left is my kitchen window. It was barely letting any light in, because each of the panes were frosted over - almost completely. This morning, the wind had stopped blowing a gale, so the wind chill was no longer that severe … however, as I brushed my teeth, partway through, the water in bathroom sink froze - both the hot and the cold. I’m glad I wasn’t attempting a shower.
We had the joy of facing this cold spell without central heat, in a house that’s over 300 years old … and lets the wind through enough to make it hard to keep a candle lit. During the worst of the wind and cold yesterday, my bathroom went down to 38℉.
Honey, I’ve got a real hankering for spring …
Did I just hear some kind soul offer me some cheese to go with my w(h)ine? I’ll take it! Gratefully! However, I’m going to have to keep it in the fridge … I wouldn’t want it to freeze. *blink*

If I had realized that you were that cold at home, I would have come and gotten you and made you sleep on my couch!!
Matter of fact, it’s supposed to be frightfully cold for the next 2 days… You want me to come get you?!!! I could use the company. :-)

oh my Moof!!! That’s bitterly cold. I’m so tired of being cold. Bone cold.
For years, I’ve comforted myself in being in Oklahoma and not having my mountains by saying ‘at least we don’t have real winter’ …this year ..we had winter. (obviously, not as bad as the north east has)
It’s nice that it’s getting to be spring around here …but it’s still dropping too cold at night.
I’m tired of cold.

Moof,
Oh My! The water froze? Now that is cold! How do you heat your house? I am telling you that I am viciously hostile when I am cold. I probably wouldn’t survive being that cold. I’d probably stay in bed all day :)
Hey, you are more than welcome to come on down here to NC. It’s Spring here already. I was outside today with short sleeves…74 degrees. You can come and thaw out! :)
It was nice to see you over at my place today. Thanks for the comment. I am planning a trip up there this summer, and that includes a visit to NH to see my brother. I’ll let you know….

Hey Moof,
That’s why I live in the banana belt of Canada. Can’t stand the cold. We had a lovely spring day today. We had a high of 59F yesterday. Hang in there, that sounds so horrible for you. Hope it passes soon.

Hi Moof - I love winter and the cold weather but with being able to be warm and cozy inside. Did your pipes get damaged from freezing?
New England is beautiful. We went to the top of MT Washington when on one vacation. It was all so beautiful and colder and windier up there!
That was one of my favorite trips. We took a mini 4 day vacation with out any plans or reservations. We left from NJ and went up from NY state, into Massachusetts, Vermont, new Hampshire coast, the lower portion of Maine, back through NH and to top of Vermont (near Lake Champlain) then back down through NY state to home. Also got some wonderful Vermont maple syrup! :) We enjoyed being free spirits! :)
I hope it warms up for you soon. :)

Good grief hon…
Well, it’s supposed to get to 40 here today, and I was thinking of complaining that it’s NEVER going to warm up, but I think I’ll now pass on the complaining and count my blessings. To you, after that 5 degree ambient, you’d probably be ready to hit a pool at 40 degrees! Let Sarah come get you, is my advice!
Love you
Shel

Moof, m’dear, how I feel for you. I hate the winter and I hate cold, and the older I get the more I despise it. I am unapologetic about my detestation. I read something recently in which the actor Morgan Freeman was sought to do a film that would be shot somewhere in northern Ontario in winter. He declined the role. “I don’t do cold, man. I’ve reached an age where I have enough money to not to have to do winter, so I don’t.” What a freedom.
Anyway, it has been so nice to have you back visiting of late and offering your (always) words of wisdom. May it warm up in Maine very soon.
Cheers,
Ian

Moof, Forget America ! Come to India. In the city I live in, (Chennai), it is 91 F! (Ninety one, you read that right !). And in May, it would be around 108 ! You could make an omelet on our tar road, or at least the part of the road where the tar has not melted and stuck to your shoes !
I went to grad school in Syracuse (NY), and during my first fall, I washed all my clothes in hot water, and hung them in my attic to dry ! They came back crisp with ice ! I broke my t-shirt, literally !
