All Blogged Up: A Moof’s Tale

Wilson Lake, Acton, ME

When we pulled up to the camp late this afternoon, this is what we saw …

Turning ever so slightly to the right, I snapped another photo …

My son Dougie … a pensive moment on the camp porch …

Tomorrow I will finish unpacking, and probably have a lot more to say. When I was up here last year, I was getting ready to start college again, but I hadn’t really begun blogging. The real blogging started on November 1. I’d been home for almost a month by then.

We’ll be here until at least until the beginning of October … and if the temperatures hold up, we’ll stay even later. This is my place of refuge. The last several years have been very busy socially during our stay up here … we’re still going to have a bit of company this year, but I think I’m going to have a reason to cut back drastically on my guests. I’ll let you all know what that reason is when I find out for sure if it’s going to happen or not …

Don’t you just love mysteries? >;o)

Looks beautiful up there!! Do you miss me??!! I wish I was there so we could all go swimming… It was soooooo hot out today.

I know what the mystery is!! And no, you can’t plug me for information. My lips are sealed. I do feel special knowing secrets though. :-)

Say Hi to Dougie for me!!!

I used to spend a weekend or two at that camp every year. I think about the place now and then. I haven’t been there in probably 30 years. In 1969 we spent a whole week there, and in between swimming and boating and lazing about, we watched the Apollo 11 landing and first moonwalks. Thanks for the reminder, and the photos!

TJ … come on up and go swimming! ;o)

Sarah … Dougie grunted “hi” back! *LOL* Yes, of course I miss you. You know I do. Won’t be long before you’ll be down this way again …

Ripple … thank you muchly, my dear! And I agree! :o)

Dale! Thanks for dropping in! I think everyone spent “a weekend or two” here back when Grammy Ballard was still here. I guess they used to come up and spend the entire summer. I can’t imagine how they did it though - they used to fill the camp up until there were at least two people in each of the 6 beds/mattresses, one on the day bed, and another on the porch! And they didn’t have running water or anything … and only that little store across the lake to get things from - on foot, no less.

Things are different now. A lot different than when I first started coming up every summer 26 years ago. I’ll take pictures of inside of the camp and post them, too - you won’t recognize the place!

By the way, Dale … the chairs you see on the porch are the ones your Dad made … :o)

That looks like such a beautiful place.

That looks so nice. I’d drop by for a cup of tea if I happened to be in the neighborhood. I grew up next to a lake and, even though I live near the ocean now (which I love) there is a special serenity with lakes.
Thank you for the pictures, Moof.

    Your friend, Ian

Thanks for the well wishes. I’m doing *much* better now.

One of the things I noticed when I moved to Maine were how many people have “camps”. I never knew what nice things they were until I went up to the Millinocket area a few weeks ago to go rafting. Mark my words, before I die, I will have a camp like a real Mainer.

When I tell people that, though, I always get some line about kittens in ovens :P

    Hiya Moof,

I keep coming back to your blog to look at these pictures from the camp. How beautiful!! Want an extra visitor for a little while? After a harrowing time lately, I see these pictures and think, “I should find a place like this. That’s exactly what I need!” I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing time, and it’s great that you have internet up there and can share the pictures and keep blogging, too! Take care,

    Carrie :)

  15. Moof Windows XP Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.6 Says:

    Pk, my dear … I hear you. I’m so sorry that your “special place” is far away from you. I hope that someday - you get to stay in your special place … {{{ hugs! }}}

Kt … thank you, dear Heart! I will certainly make a might effort! :o)

Wolfbaby, thank you my dear! Although living does continue while we’re up here, and sometimes sad things happen, the peacefulness of the place tends to leech some of the anguish away. Water has a healing, soothing effect, it seems.

Wanda … it is! Thank you for stopping in!

Ian, if you were nearby and didn’t stop in for a cup of tea, I would be upset! If you’re ever in the area in August or September, let me know! :o)

D … I’m relieved to hear that you’re feeling better. I couldn’t believe you were blogging so soon after surgery. Most people would still be pretty out of it … I know it takes me a lot longer than that to recover. Don’t push too hard, even now. You might feel better, but your body’s still coming up to speed …

I wish I’d “met” you when you came through on your way to Millinocket! We could have done lunch! Let me know when you come through again, ok?

Carrie, my dear … you’re welcome to come and stay as long as you’d like. Just have a seat, and I’ll pour you a Grateful Dead, and we’ll have a chat on the porch! ;o)

I keep forgetting about that not pushing myself thing! :) But I’ve been blogging for six years now, so I couldn’t really stop myself, anyway.
