Trying Out a Spam Plug In
I’m trying out some new spam software … so, if you try to leave me a message, and it gets gobbled up, or you get a message calling you a spammer, I’d like to know. I hear the plug in is quite good, and that sort of thing shouldn’t happen, however, since I haven’t used it before, I’ll be feeling a little cautious about it until it proves itself to me.
The last thing I want to do is miss genuine comments.
It’s called Spam Karma 2, and this is what it has to say about itself:
The Machine
Spam Karma 2 is the proud successor to Spam Karma, with whom it shares most of the development ideas, but absolutely none of the code. It is meant to stop all forms of automated Blog spam effortlessly, while remaining as unobtrusive as possible to regular commenters.
So … I want to know if it blocks any of you … if it does, first of all. please forgive me. I read that the spam messages can be pretty raw, although I haven’t seen them myself. Email me and I’ll see if I can figure out how to configure the thing properly.
Thankee!

You should leave yourself a bunch of comments that look like spam and see how it works!!
Oh, I’m gonna try it… You can delete the comments if they come through. :-D

Ok, I tried to leave a comment of spam and it didn’t work!! Whoooo hoooo!!
I said: “Sorry, but your comment has been flagged by the spam filter running on this blog: this might be an error, in which case all apologies. Your comment will be presented to the blog admin who will be able to restore it immediately.
You may want to contact the blog admin via e-mail to notify him.”
Cool!

how do you leave a comment that looks like spam?
July 25th, 2006 at 9:29 pm
I hope this goes through. I hate to think of myself a spam
July 25th, 2006 at 9:29 pm
Woohoo, I am spam-free!
July 25th, 2006 at 9:51 pm
wow! Youse guys are amazing! *LOL*
TJ … it works really strangely. First of all, it checks to make sure that you’re really here, and posting a comment from long distance with a different IP than the one you’re really using. Then it counts how many links you’ve added to your comment. Then it also matches against a confirmed spam IP database. It’s been faultless so far. I may actually get on top of comment spam this way!

Kt … you passed! ;o)
—
Pk … the software tells me that it had you do something special, if I understand it right. What did it make you do?
—
Sarah … why am I not surprised that would try to fake it out? *LOL* … and succeed, no less!?!?
Girl, you’re a riot! ;o)
—
Deb … please, tell me that you didn’t have any serious doubts, eh? I would also hate the idea of thinking of my psych friend as having an identity crisis: “I hate to think of myself a spam” … >;o)

Ok, I’m trying it. Hope I don’t get knocked off for spam.

So, if I want to send you a disgusting metal can filled with mystery meat, you are going to send it back? ;)
July 26th, 2006 at 9:04 am
Cathy … you’re fine! I’m getting a kick out of everyone trying it out to see if they get fingered! I wasn’t sure how the plug in was going to work when I uploaded and enabled it, but it caught 33 spams overnight … it rocks!
So far, the only person who wasn’t a spammer that it caught was Sarah, and that was because she cut and pasted a spam into her comment. It caught her, but it made the spam a different color to catch my attention so that I would see that it wasn’t like the other spams. I’m sold! I just uploaded and enabled it on all of my other blogs.

Pattie, you’re so funny! Hmmm … disgusting is the operative word on those cans of mystery meat! *LOL* Gee, do you have a “mystery meat” attachment on your browser? >;o)

[…] It hasn’t just been the email spammers. My comment spam went from an occasional annoyance several months ago, to being a very serious problem today. A few days ago, I got 141 in a 24 hour period on this blog alone. I’ve got a plugin that works amazingly well for that … I’ll give you an update on that in another post. […]
