My Stack Overfloweth
For those of you who have been getting a stack overflow error from clicking on links on my blog …
You all use Internet Explorer … that’s the first problem …
The people at Word Press helped me track it down to one of my plug-ins … “Performancing Metrics” … which is a very nice little blogging program, with a lot of fancy features. I went to the PMetrics web site, and did a bit of research, and discovered that if I have the plug-in enabled, and the PMetrics code in my footer, that it can cause people running Internet Explorer to have a Stack Overflow error.
I’ve removed the code in my footer … so if it happens again - I’d like to know! It would be “back to the drawing board!”
Let me use this opportunity to put in a plug for Fire Fox. Really. No, I don’t work for them. No, I don’t get kick backs. I’m just so happy with it that I want to share the love! :o)
I have a left side bar that shows Technorati links, Del.icio.us links, my Favorites, my history, downloads progress, my extensions, my themes, page information, a biobar … and much more …
In my bottom status bar, I have my Performancing button, InFormEnter that fills things in for me with a click, a calculator, and a button that allows me to look at the page in Internet Explorer, if I want. This was handy when I was doing college labs that would only open in IE … I never had to run IE once. There’s also a little button I click down there if I want to see the CSS or the Javascript on someone’s blog. Those are all free plug-ins that you can get for Fire Fox.
I have TABS!!! I could never do without Tabs!!! I’ll paste some pics in below for you to see, but in short, each tab can be a different web site … and you can have as many open as you want. You can grab the tab, and move it around. Tabbed browsing is what IE is hoping to steal from Fire Fox … :p
I have a LOAD of buttons in my top tool bars … including buttons that reopen tabs which I’ve accidentally closed - very handy when I hit a close button while I’m writing a post … and yes, I actually do silly things like that.
Oh … did I forget to mention that I also have spell checking in everything I do? How about support for French, Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic, and loads of other characters?
The Menu bar … at the very top, has a weather plug-in which is showing me the day and night weather and temperatures through next Tuesday … and if I run my pointer over a part of it, it shows me an AccuWeather radar map for my area.
Here are some pics:
Top part of my Fire Fox browser … left side. Notice the Weather stuff at the top, then one level down, you can see the regular tool bar. Underneath that, there’s a button bar which is configurable - you can add/remove a bunch of stuff from there.
Left to right, I have Display open Tabs list, Reopen closed tabs, Display closed windows list, Open new window, Open new Tab, A whole load of navigation features (including a “who is”), Open/close sidebar, top/bottom page, Flashgot, Sessions (browser will reopen with what you had in all the tabs when you closed, if you want,) Mail, ChatZilla, 3 Del.icio.us tools, 2 spelling tools, IE tab control, Toggle Google bar display, and a Google search.
Next row down is my personal quick bar, and I have almost everything in folders to save bar space.
Here to the left is a picture of one of my folders open, with the web links inside of it. I have several folders like that, as you can see.
Back to the above picture, underneath my personal tool bar, I have a Google Bar, and underneath the Google Bar, you can see some open tabs.
By the way, the Theme that I happen to use is called Nautipolis. There are hundreds of different themes. Your browser can look just about any way you’d like it to. This just happens to be the one I prefer. The default Fire Fox is my second preference.
Now, to the right is the side panel, which is on the left of the browser. It has 3 positions - the one you see here is open all the way. You can also close it down to the icons you see on the side (hourglass, etc.) or all the way to the edge of the screen. That tiny little gripper remains there so that you can click on it to reopen the side panel easily.
In the side panel, you can have all of the things I mentioned above … plus a whole lot more. Here you see a few of my browser extensions … :o)
The ones I use the most are Tab Mix Plus, InFormEnter, Minimize to Tray, JS View, AdBlock (which is out of sight,) All-in-One-Sidebar, ConQuery, and Forecast Fox. I have 30 extensions in all, and I occasionally go back to the Mozilla web site to look for whatever is new.
Before I forget, here is a link for downloading FireFox: FireFox 1.5 It’s free, it’s quick, it’s easy … you’ll wonder why you waited so darn long! ;o)
Finally, here is a pic of the stuff I have in my bottom status bar:

You see the goodies that I named above … plus the Adblock which I forgot to mention, but which I can’t live without!
And so, folks … if you’re running IE, you should at least take a look. It’s free, it’s easy to install, and it rocks!
It’s gone way past Netscape … and is catching up to IE pretty quickly!
Oh … and if you want to know about the companion email client, Thunderbird, let me know. Plugins, Themes, and a whole lot more. What Fire Fox is doing for browsing, Thunderbird is doing for email.

I’m speechless…
:-O
While I try to close my wide open mouth, let me paste here what I found in Dr. Engel’s blog some time ago…
I would require 81 hours to just set up my Firefox browser like this. And even if I do set it up, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do anything with it.
The only plugins that I have are FireFTP, which is Firefox’s free FTP client, that I use for uploading stuff (mainly pictures) to my blog and a Bloglines button on my bottom bar.
Though I’ve been using Firefox and tabbed browsing for about 3 or 4 years now, I never knew that it is possible to drag and move the tabs!! Thanks Moofie!

Dr. Scan Man! I’ve been thinking about you! I hope that you’re not too tired, and that things are going well with you! How are Mrs. Scan Man’s tests coming along? Will she back home soon
You always say so many nice things about me that my face ends up being quite RED!!! *blush!* You just see good things about people because you’re such a good person yourself!!!
About the Tabs, the plug-in you need to be able to manipulate them like that is “Tab Mix Plus” … it not only allows you to grab the tabs and move them around, but it also puts a close button on each tab, and an “open new tab” button on the left of your tab bar.
If I remember right, it’s the one that adds “reopen closed tab” and so on to your menu also, if you want it there. You can even rename a tab if you have a bunch of them open, and want to identify one by a particular name.
Quite a nice plug in!
About FTP … have you tried your Word Press’ built in FTP yet? It works pretty well, especially if you know a bit about how to form IMG HTML. I uploaded all of the pics in this post with Word Press, and just added an — align=”left” — to the image structure, so that I could have writing on the right side of the images.

I too love FireFox, and it is the tabs that swayed me. Man - you have a ton of cool stuff that I never even heard of!! With all of that, do you have room to read?? LOL!

I’m having a lot better luck with firefox than my last browser. I only have the base model, and haven’t upgraded too much yet — maybe this weekend I’ll try to check things out more.
I do agree with the tabs! Could not do without them. I try to limit myself to only four open tabs — if anymore, then I know I’ll go into tab overload and my staff may find me passed out on my desk saying, “I need more tabs!”
HA!

Moof, I’m not sure whether your presentation is in Sanscrit or Aramaic! Must admit that I’m awed about your fluency in chatting HTML! Egyptology is easier to learn…
June 30th, 2006 at 5:35 pm
Holy cow Moof, I have firefox but not like you do.I wouldn’t know how to get all that or what to do with it after I did. you have far more patience than I do. Have a peaceful and stress free weekend Moof.
June 30th, 2006 at 7:04 pm
Wolfbaby - me? Love FireFox? What gives you that idea??? ;o)
—
Mama Mia … lots of visible screen, honest! *LOL*
—
Dr. Anon … you gave me a life-sized picture of that! You wouldn’t be able to be anonymously addicted anymore if’n that was to happen! >;o)
Let’s see now … blog addict … tabs addict … hmmm …
I have a cute little jacket with funny sleeves ya may be interested in seeing … >;o)
—
Dr. Engel … oh dear! Sanskrit! We’re gonna need some lessons from Dr. Scan Man, I believe!
Imagine! And I had no idea that I was that smart … !!! *cough!*
—
Cathy … you know what Dr. Anon said about “I need more tabs!” Well, I’m like that with the plug-ins! *LOL*
I’ve just got to get my “plug-ins” fix every few months! ;o)
June 30th, 2006 at 11:24 pm
You’ve overwhelmed me Moof.
You have to remember that I am still operating with Win 98.
It takes my brain ten years to catch up with the current technology.
Which, by that time is ten years old.
later…

I’m not the right person if you want help with Sanskrit. I can’t recognize half the alphabet!
I can barely manage Tamil and Hindi.
You may try Arunn though..
July 1st, 2006 at 11:27 pm
TJ … that’s OK. I think we have it fixed. If it happens again, please let me know! Thankee!
—
Dr. Scan Man … you mean you ONLY know English, and Tamil fluently, and understand Hindi, Malayalam & Kannada? *cough*
My dear heart … if I were as conversant as you are with as many languages, I’d be one happy camper!
I was raised in a French household, and had to learn English. I now think in English, and I’m able to read and understand several Latin languages because of the French … and I envy everyone who’s been exposed to many different languages.
I’ve spent myself studying Hebrew and a bit of Arabic, but never got very far because to learn a language, you have to hear it, you have to be exposed to it. I think “hearing” a language is the most difficult part of all.
So, Arunn is into Sanskrit, eh? This could get interesting! … :o)

First things first…I know from personal experience that listening to spoken Hebrew will only make a bad situation worse when it comes to learning how to speak it…friend of mine in Las Vegas emigrated West from Tel Aviv when he was little (Hebrew was one of 5 languages he spoke) and though he speaks almost flawless English, of course he speaks Hebrew with his parents. After listening to him on the phone with them one day, he hung up to meet my blank stare. On inquiry, I asked him how it was possible for a language to survive 8000 years with no vowels. Took him the better part of 10 minutes to stop laughing long enough to get back into his chair.
Secondly…Moof (I really dislike calling you that btw, your given name is wonderful), how on Earth can your machine get out of its own way with Firefox having all that bloat installed??? I used to love Firefox, but it got rather heavy (and all I had installed was themes!)…slower than molasses, on Fedora Linux no less!! I got Opera 9.x; has all the same features as Firefox and more, and takes up less resources. Nothing against firefox in itself, but lately it seems to be suffering a slight case of Microsoft-itis…

Well hello Classmate X! Thanks for visiting! :o)
Ivrit actually does have vowels - they use vowel diacritic marks, along with the dagesh which modifies certain consonants from soft to hard. Hebrew is a very “clean” language, and a real pleasure to learn. When I was over in the Holy Land often, I was able to converse a bit, and I could read and write almost anything I wanted. Now, however … I’m lucky if I can pick out simple words in children’s books … and anyone saying anything to me in Hebrew will more than likely earn themselves a blank stare. It’s just been too long.
About my “given name” … I haven’t used it in a very long time. I’ve been Moof to my kids, my husband, my ministry, my online friends … and my closest “nose to nose” friends for so many years that I honestly never think of myself as other than Moof. By the way - that’s Moof as in “hoof” … not Moof as in “moo” …
My grandbabies know me as “Grammoof!” :o)
You know, I’m really surprised you have a hard time with Firefox. The only time I ever get a bloat problem is if I have a whole lot of tabs open, and don’t shut it down periodically to free up the memory. I’ve used it on my XP, and in Linux (Slackware) KDE … and it’s never given me a problem. My only problem with Opera is, unless it’s changed a lot, it has a rather creative interpretation of some web sites, although I haven’t looked it in a number of years now.
But honestly, I really like my Firefox and all of my plugins, and it’s going to take something really nice to wean me off! :o)
Just the spell checker is enough to make me valiantly fight off the competition!
Are you enjoying your vacation? Mine’s running me ragged! *LOL*

Yes, I do have Internet Explorer and I got the “Stack Overflow” error code. I didn’t know what that meant! All this stuff just makes my head spin! Whenever I get sick of Blogger and start thinking of doing something else, I just remember that I don’t have much in the way of cyber courage! Ah well, I guess that’s one of the reasons why I still have a separate dot com website and do the blog in a very small way. Hope you’re doing well and you have no more leaks in your house!

“About your given name”…it was the only way I knew you for 8 weeks, if you’ll recall…
The Firefox bloat issue caught me off-guard, to be honest; I swore by it even in the face of our school “mandating” IE (they’ve since expanded their repertoire to include Firefox and Netscape but the math labs still won’t play nice without IE). Opera has changed significantly since the last time you used it; it used to be simply an IE shell, but it since then it’s developed into a standalone open-source browser with built-in mail client. Look it up sometime when you have the opportunity, for something different…and yes, it has tabs too!

Hey Marj! Thank you for stopping in and commenting! :o)
I bet that you’re a lot of internet savvy than you let on! You keep a rocking blog, and seem to get by very well! Cut yourself some slack!
—
WB Classmate X! Yes … it is the only way you knew me! It would be great for the school to allow me to call myself Moof … however … *LOL*
You know, when I was doing labs, I never used IE. I got the IE Tab plug in for Firefox, and it worked great! I took all of my tests in it, did the lab assigments in it … etc. Quite handy.
I’ll certainly look Opera up again, since it’s been a very very long time, and I’m sure they must have improved. If they don’t all my nifty little plug ins though, I’m going to stick with my Firefox. I can’t imagine what I’d do without some of the plugins which have made life so much easier!

[...] His site features some very complicated, yet very cool CSS programing. And if you aren’t yet convinced that Internet Explorer is absolute crap, than go look at his site with that browser. It doesn’t work, does it??!! See, IE is not capable of handling even standard CSS coding. Not even the new IE 7. So this should encourage you to get Firefox if you don’t already have it. And if you’re still not convinced, go read this. [...]
